The 5 Best Bars in Georgetown

Jul 26 , 2011

The Georgetown neighborhood of Washington D.C. by day bustles with visitors perusing the quirky little shops and restaurants of the historic M Street. The nightlife is just as lively – if not more so – than the day. Whether you are up for a dance floor rife with students or an upscale experience, the Georgetown bars will satisfy.

The Tombs

The Tombs represents the quintessential campus sports bar, located on 36th Street near the Georgetown University east campus quad. The walls are donned with vintage university sports memorabilia. Rub elbows with college students and young executives of D.C. on Friday and Saturday nights when the DJ provides music for dancing.

Enjoy half-priced wine on Sunday evenings and pitcher beer specials alongside discounted menu items throughout the week. Catch year-round sporting events on projector screens. The Tombs isn’t just another Georgetown bar, it’s a Georgetown University legend.

Rhino Bar and Pumphouse

The Rhino Bar and Pumphouse is a prominent sports bar on Georgetown’s lively M Street. The bar is the official headquarters for the Philadelphia Eagles and prioritizes NFL football on Sundays and Mondays. Also hitting the top bill on the screens are the Red Sox, OSU, Georgetown University and Penn State college sports.

The bar serves cheap pitchers of beer and wings on game days. The Rhino Bar and Pumphouse is a traditional sports bar by day and a classic college bar night, making it one of the most popular Georgetown bars. After the game is played out, the dance floor heats up with students and twentysomethings.

L2 Lounge

For an upscale Georgetown bar experience, look no further than the L2 Lounge. This club is tucked away from the bustle of M Street just one block south on Cady’s Alley NW. The decor of the L2 Lounge is ultra contemporary with elements such as exposed brick and concrete, curvy and colorful sofas and lounges, stark contrasted soft chairs with clean lines.

The indirect lighting scheme at this Georgetown bar creates sophisticated ambiance. A DJ provides house music, while screens display old art house films. The wine sommelier guides guests into personal wine choices while the skilful mixologists at the bar provide top-notch, top-shelf cocktails. Services at the L2 include valet parking and bottle service.

Billy Martin’s Tavern

Billy Martin’s Tavern was established in 1933, which makes it one of the oldest bars in Georgetown. Located on the corner of Washington Avenue and N Street, the tavern offers both indoor seating and outside sidewalk tables. The tavern is a classic Irish pub, complete with mahogany bar, Tiffany lamps, brass taps, and a dark atmosphere.

Billy Martin’s Tavern serves more than mere pub burgers, they serve a rather extensive dinner entree menu that includes fresh seafood, prime rib, and lamb chops, and it is sometimes considered as having some of the best food in Georgetown. The beer selection, great food, and catchy ambiance of Billy Martin’s Tavern traditionally attract many of Washington’s elite, including presidents.

Modern

While perusing M Street in Georgetown, you may hear the distant pulsations of bass; this Georgetown bar is called Modern. Modern features hip hop music and a wide-open wooden dance floor. Despite being located in a basement, Modern has a truly elegant decor, with exquisite chandeliers hanging over the dance floor and contemporary furnishings in the lounge.

As such, there is a casual dress code to keep things classy. Guests at Modern enjoy some of the hottest DJs in the metropolitan D.C. area, top-shelf bottle service, and a warm and modern atmosphere.
